During the height of the pandemic, I started writing this song about gentrification. Once I had the basic framework of a song, T came with the drums, and we were off to the races. Xavier was always the voice I had in mind for it, as we were working on a funk/soul project called That Selective Collective. For the guitar, I reached out to my friend and longtime collaborator from when we were in a funk band called Power of Soul at Rutgers in New Jersey named Dr. Knucklehad. For the keys, I tapped my favorite pianist, arranger, and personal hero, LarLuv, who I am lucky enough to call my father. Xavier made some impactful changes to the lyrics sharpen the focus and we recorded it for release on Juneteenth Weekend 2022.
